Description

The third edition of this atlas is dedicated to the urological giants upon whose shoulders we stand — especially Arthur Smith, Ralph Clayman, and Patrick Walsh. This book provides focused-yet-thorough chronicles of the advances in minimally invasive urology since the 2007 edition. The accomplished editors oversee contributions of 98 experts from eight countries, while the accompanying website presents high-impact videos.

Purpose

The purpose is to present and review advances and innovations in laparoscopic and robotic surgery over the past 10 years while also paying homage to the history and development of minimally invasive urologic surgery. The stated goals are to disseminate knowledge in this burgeoning field in the spirit of making these procedures safer, less invasive, more successful, and more cost-effective. These are worthy objectives and the accompanying website promotes these goals by facilitating access to the information in the atlas.

Audience

Urology residents, fellows, and practicing urologists are the intended audience. The authors and editors are authorities in laparoscopic/robotic surgery and they effectively achieve their goals.

Features

The 45 chapters are grouped into eight sections. Section I presents basic techniques in laparoscopic and robotic urologic surgery. Sections II through VIII cover lymphadenectomy, renal surgery, ureteral surgery, prostate surgery, bladder surgery, adrenal surgery, and testicular surgery. Chapters in each section cover all uses of laparoscopic and robotic surgical technology. In addition to oncologic procedures, the atlas gives equal consideration to benign/reconstructive procedures. Chapters dedicated to robotic renal donor/recipient surgery, buccal mucosa graft for ureteral strictures, and denervation for chronic testicular pain provide evidence for this. Chapters are well organized and provide basic science and historical details appropriate to the scope of this atlas. The videos encompass all aspects of laparoscopic/robotic surgery, from patient positioning to operative steps to exit strategies. Tables of contents are provided for both text and video material in the atlas.

Assessment

This seminal atlas is a strong addition to the urologic literature. Urologists, trainees, and, especially, budding laparoscopic/robotic surgeons will find this not only educational, but also exciting. Whether accessed in the library or on the train, the atlas’s strongest attributes are its organization and its availability in print and digital formats for the urologist on the go.
