Diagnostic Pathology: Normal Histology, 3rd Edition

By: Matthew R. Lindberg, MD

ISBN: 9780323834148

Pub Date: September 29, 2022

Description

This updated third edition describes the normal histology of different organ systems. The second edition was published in 2018.

Purpose

The primary purpose of this book is to present the histological features of each organ system in the body. Additionally, the authors cover common histological variations (e.g., age-related variations), pitfalls, and artifacts associated with each anatomic site.

Audience

The book is written for practicing pathologists, pathology residents, medical students, and students of histology. Clinicians or research scientists who seek to understand the histology of a particular type of tissue or body site will also find this reference to be of value.

Features

The book is divided into 14 sections. The first (introductory) section covers the basic components of the cell and types of cells found in the human body. It also describes different techniques used to characterize and visualize the cells, including special stains, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy. Common histologic artifacts are also covered. The remainder of the book is divided by organ systems. Every tissue type is discussed in a similar outline that includes macroscopic features, microscopic anatomy, and special considerations and variations. The text is concise and written in a bulleted format. The description is followed by multiple images with concise captions that describe salient features of each image. The book in total features over 2,100 images, including microscopic images, gross images, electron micrographs, and illustrations. Compared to the second edition, this current one has been updated and improved with inclusion of new histologic images showing a limited selection of abnormal pathology and how it contrasts with normal. In the editor’s own words, these “abnormal” images, although never a focus in any chapter, aid in marking the line between where the normal tissue ends and diseased tissue begins. The book also features a comprehensive index.

Assessment

This book remains a favorite resource for learning and refreshing on normal histology. Solid knowledge of normal histology is “a must” for any pathologist, and this book is very appealing to busy practicing pathologists and pathology residents due to its relatively short and concise text and abundance of superb images. I highly recommend this book to all surgical pathologists and pathology trainees.

Of course positive, this edition is a companion not only for pathologist but also to those dreaming to be. What a good work, keep it up.
