Bruce M. Carlson, MD, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Anatomy in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology in the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He served as chair of that department from 1998-2000. He is also Research Professor Emeritus in the school’s Institute of Gerontology, of which he was the director from 2000 to 2003. He is the author of Human Embryology and Developmental Biology, 5th Edition.

A pioneer in the field of mammalian regeneration, Dr. Carlson is the author of more than ten books on embryology and regeneration. During his 40-year career he conducted groundbreaking  laboratory research which included collaborations with scientists in the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Finland, and New Zealand.

Dr. Carlson has served as president of the American Association of Anatomists, and president of the Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology, and Neurobiology Chairpersons. Additional honors include the AAAS Newcomb-Cleveland Prize, membership in the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and the Henry Gray Award of the American Association of Anatomists. An accomplished teacher, Dr. Carlson has received both the Elizabeth Crosby Teaching Award and the Kaiser-Permanente Teaching Award from the University of Michigan Medical School.

Dr. Carlson received his MD and PhD degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1965. He also holds a BA from Gustavus Adolphus College and an MS from Cornell University.
