Description:

This has been a foundational, go-to reference for orthopedic surgeons around the world for over 75 years. This 13th edition represents the continued efforts by the editors and publisher to maintain its preeminent position as both current and comprehensive. In addition to the four-volume print version, the accompanying ebook version allows complete access to the text on any computer or electronic device, as well as bonus videos, links to references, and the ability to borrow the images for presentations, etc.

Purpose:

The founding purpose is to present the subject of orthopedic surgery in a simple and comprehensive manner. I am most impressed at the authors’ accurate but humble description. Campbell’s is commonly the first reference residents in training and many orthopedic surgeons seek out.

Audience:

The editors of this edition are highly respected leaders in the field of orthopedics and have brought together a cadre of chapter authors who have achieved the high standards of the 12 previous editions expected by orthopedic surgeons.

Features:

This book is truly comprehensive, ranging from general principles and surgical approaches to specific surgical procedures within the subcategories of orthopedic surgery including hand, foot/ankle, adult reconstruction, pediatrics, tumor, and sports medicine. Many surgeons and residents in training will turn first to Campbell’s when researching a question before going to dedicated books or research articles on the topic. The images and drawings are high quality. Techniques are highlighted and broken down in sequential steps.

Assessment:

It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to review this update of one of the classic orthopedic references. If an institutional or personal library had only one book in orthopedics, it should be the most current version of Campbell’s. This 13th edition is a worthy update and maintains the established excellence of previous editions.
