David Taylor, MD, FRCS, FRCP, FRCOphth, DSc(med) is Professor Emeritus of the Institute of Child Health at the University College London and Director of Examinations of the International Council of Ophthalmology in London. He is a co-author of the widely respected and highly reviewed Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, 4th Edition.

Dr. Taylor was born in Australia, spent his early years in Asia, and was educated in England. He attended university in Liverpool, where medical and surgical house jobs soon led to ophthalmology training, first at St. Paul’s Eye Hospital, Liverpool, then Great Ormond Street Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. His experience in pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology was enhanced by an observership in Washington, D.C. and a fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Taylor was appointed to Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and The National Hospitals for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London in 1976.

Dr. Taylor’s clinical interests include pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, developmental problems, cataract, and metabolic diseases. He has received several research grants, authored over 150 papers in peer-reviewed journals, presented 17 named lectures, received 11 medals, and has done 14 visiting professorships.

As Director of the ICO Examinations committee, Dr. Taylor has concentrated on modernizing, developing, rationalizing, and promoting the ICO’s current examinations and developing new examinations. His aim is to produce a world class, universally affordable and economically run series of ophthalmology examinations that will support improvements in standards of ophthalmology practiced world-wide.
