Emile L. Boulpaep, MD is Professor and Director of Medical and Graduate Studies, Cellular and Molecular Physiology at Yale University. He is the co-author of Medical Physiology, 2nd Edition. Dr. Boulpaep received his medical degree from the University of Louvain, Belgium, and an honorary M.A. from Yale University. His research interests include the electrical properties of membrane proteins in plasma membranes and junctions of renal tubule cells.

Since 1977, Dr. Boulpaep has been President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Belgian American Educational Foundation, the leading independent philanthropy in the support of exchanging university students, scientists, and scholars between the United States and Belgium. He is also a member of the board of the Francqui Foundation, and on the Honorary Board of Directors at Bells for Peace, a charitable organization that preserves the tower belfry of Virginia Union University’s Belgian Friendship Building.

Dr. Boulpaep has been the recipient of numerous honors and awards for his work in physiology, including a lifetime achievement award from the Belgian American Chamber of Commerce; Doctor Honoris Causa from the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium; the Homer W. Smith Award from the American Society of Nephrology and the New York Heart Association; Overseas Fellow of Churchill College, University of Cambridge; the Dean’s Medical Education Farr Prize from the Yale School of Medicine; the Bohmfalk Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching at Yale University; and the nobility title of Chevalier/Ridder, Kingdom of Belgium.
