Jeffrey S. Hyams, MD is director of the Gastroenterology Department at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center and professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed both his residency and fellowship at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. He is co-author of Pediatric Gastrointestinal and Liver Disease, 4th Edition.

In his research, Dr. Hyams focuses on two areas. The first is inflammatory bowel disease in children; he has been involved in developing strategies for assessing disease activities to facilitate clinical trials, investigating mechanisms of growth failure in the children, establishing a North American registry for newly diagnosed patients, and participating in conducting clinical trials. The second area of research focus for Dr. Hyams is functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly irritable bowel syndrome and nonulcer dyspepsia. He is a member of the ROME committee, an international group establishing diagnosis guidelines for the disorders. Dr. Hyams also works with the American Academy of Pediatrics to establish practice guidelines for children with chronic abdominal pain.
