Joseph E. Parrillo, MD, FCCM is Chairman, Heart and Vascular Hospital, Hackensack University Medical Center and Professor of Medicine, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Hackensack, New Jersey. He is a co-author of Critical Care Medicine, 5th Edition.

 

Dr. Parrillo received his medical degree with honors from Cornell University Medical College and did his post-graduate training at Massachusetts General Hospital, The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and the National Institutes of Health. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Allergy and Immunology, Cardiovascular Disease, and Critical Care Medicine.

 

Examples of Dr. Parrillo’s work can be found in the more than 1,050 publications he has authored or co-authored. One of Dr. Parrillo’s most notable scientific contributions was the discovery that myocardial depression was very common in human sepsis and septic shock, and that it was reversible. This ground-breaking, seminal research has resulted in major insights regarding the mechanisms of infection induced heart and vascular abnormalities.

 

He has received numerous professional honors and awards, including the NIH Director’s Award, the highest civil service employee honor, for “creating a superior Critical Care Medicine Department, which has permitted NIH Institutes to conduct research involving very sick patients.” He is also a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Critical Care Medicine in recognition of his “extraordinary contributions” to research, education, and patient care.

 

Dr. Parrillo is a past president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), and for 18 years he served as editor-in-chief of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Parrillo served on the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Test and Policy Committee writing the certifying examinations in critical care medicine. Dr. Parrillo has also authored chapters on “Septic Shock” and “An Approach to Shock” in Harrison’s Textbook of Medicine and Cecil’s Textbook of Medicine.
