Patrick J. Byrne, MD, FACS is Associate Professor and Director of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is the author of Skin Cancer, An Issue of Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics.

Dr. Byrne was born and raised in California, where he trained under several national leaders in facial plastic surgery. He received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, and completed his postgraduate work at UCSD and the University of Minnesota. Dr. Byrne is board certified in facial plastic surgery by both the American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Considered one of the world’s leading facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Byrne treats patients from across the globe and lectures internationally on facial paralysis and skin cancer reconstruction. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters in the field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Dr. Byrne also directs the Johns Hopkins Fellowship Program in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery within the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery.

Community involvement and charitable work are extremely important to Dr. Byrne. He is the founder and co-medical director of the Greater Baltimore Cleft Lip and Palate Team, which provides comprehensive care to children with congenital facial deformities. Dr. Byrne also oversees the Johns Hopkins Hospital Punta Pacifica, a state-of-the-art inpatient facility in Panama City, Panama. For over 10 years, Dr. Byrne has volunteered his expertise overseas annually, performing volunteer surgery and medical relief in developing countries around the world. He has worked in Mexico, Kenya, China, Vietnam, Nicaragua, and Ecuador. His foundation, the Face Forward Foundation, is dedicated to using technology to enhance the rehabilitation of cleft lip and cleft palate patients in the developing world.

Dr. Byrne’s clinical interests include facial nerve disorders, microvascular reconstruction, craniofacial surgery, and cosmetic surgery of the face. His research interests include treatment of facial paralysis, nerve regeneration, biomaterials and wound healing, outcomes of cosmetic surgery, and international volunteerism and surgical consulting. Dr. Byrne is a leading authority on rhinoplasty, rejuvenation of the aging face, skin cancers, and facial reanimation.
