Richard Kozarek, MD is Chief of Gastroenterology in the Section of Gastroenterology at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. He is co-author of ERCP, 2nd Edition.

Dr. Kozarek is one of the country’s leading experts in gastroenterology. He has been named a Castle Connolly America’s Top Doctor every year since 2002. He also received a Patients’ Choice Award in 2012, and was voted one of Seattle’s Top Doctors in 2009 and 2010. Other honors have included President of the World Gastroenterology Organization; President of the Society for Gastrointestinal Intervention; and the ASGE’s Rudolf V. Schindler Award.

After earning his medical degree at the University of Wisconsin at Madison Medical School in 1973, Dr. Kozarek completed an internship at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He went on to complete a residency in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix. He performed a fellowship in gastroenterology at the Phoenix Veterans Administration Medical Center, University of Arizona at Phoenix and Tucson, in 1978.

Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Kozarek is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and American College of Physicians. His areas of special expertise include esophageal diseases, therapeutic endoscopy, gastrointestinal cancer, inflammatory bowel diseases, and pancreatic and biliary tract disease. He has contributed to over 200 articles and publications.
