Description

This is the ninth edition of a comprehensive, two-volume book on the epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of patients with vascular disease. The 200 chapters are grouped into 31 sections that cover topics ranging from basic science, risk factors, evaluation, imaging, perioperative care, complications, techniques, grafts, and devices to the management of specific vascular diseases. The last section addresses the business of vascular surgery. This edition also includes access to a digital version that includes 19 videos. The eighth edition was published in 2014.

Purpose

The purpose is to provide the definitive source on vascular surgery. More specifically, the authors have revised the book to reflect the evolving scope of vascular practice to include both open and endovascular therapy. Similarly, the content reflects all aspects of vascular care, from open surgery and endovascular therapy to medical management. As such, the book has an increased number of chapters to cover the wide spectrum of evolving vascular disease management yet the chapters have been shortened, making them more focused, so that the overall number of pages remains similar to the eighth edition. New sections include the management of pediatric patients and the business of vascular practices. Among the 35 new chapters are ones covering topics such as median arcuate ligament syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, and the management of chronic compartment syndrome, among others. Overall, the objectives of the book are met, and the online format adds value.

Audience

This edition covers the breadth of vascular disease and its management, including open surgery, endovascular surgery, and medical management. Topics covered include the basics of vascular disease, perioperative management, vascular hemodynamics, basic skills and techniques, and a very broad range of specific vascular disease topics from head to toe. This edition includes new topics, given the expanding scope of vascular disease management. The inclusion of expanded sections on open exposure will prove to be a good resource, given that open vascular surgery has been diminishing over time yet remains a skill set that is required for all vascular surgeons, young and old. A nice feature of this edition is the inclusion of a table of contents at the beginning of each chapter, in both the print and digital versions. The illustrations throughout are of a very high quality, useful, and internally consistent. The authors have also made a concerted effort to include photos and diagnostic images (ultrasound, CT, MR, and angiograms) when possible.

Assessment

This is the go-to resource for anyone who manages patients with vascular disease, as there is no competitor. The ninth edition offers valuable new sections and chapters that reflect the evolving scope of vascular disease management. Each chapter is well laid out, presents pertinent information, and is clearly written. The digital version offers some very useful features.

Overall, this book continues to be a very important resource that should be on the shelf of every vascular surgeon and vascular specialist.
