Sherine E. Gabriel, MD, MSc is the William J. and Charles H. Mayo Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She holds a primary appointment in health sciences research and a joint appointment in rheumatology. She is also Dean of the Mayo Medical School. Dr. Gabriel is a co-author of Kelley’s Textbook of Rheumatology, 9th Edition.

An established NIH-funded investigator, Dr. Gabriel has integrated her knowledge of clinical rheumatology with her training in epidemiology and health services research to make important contributions to our understanding of the risks, determinants, and outcomes of rheumatic diseases. Outstanding achievements include her many publications on the risks, costs, and cost-effectiveness of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); epidemiologic studies examining the risks of connective tissue diseases among women with breast implants; population-based studies characterizing the epidemiology of nearly all the major rheumatic diseases, and studies defining the economic impact of rheumatoid arthritis. Most recently, Dr. Gabriel’s research has focused on elucidating the risks and determinants of heart disease among people with RA.

Dr. Gabriel received her medical degree from the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada. She performed an internship at the University of Manitoba Teaching Hospitals, and a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. Dr. Gabriel then completed both a fellowship in rheumatology at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine and a research fellowship in rheumatology research at Wellesley Hospital. She also holds an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
