Steven E. Weinberger, MD, FACP is Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Executive Vice President and CEO of the American College of Physicians. He is a co-author of Principles of Pulmonary Medicine, 6th Edition.

Dr. Weinberger received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and performed his postgraduate work in pulmonary medicine at the University of California-San Francisco Medical Center and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Before assuming his current position at the ACP in 2010, Dr. Weinberger served for six years as Senior Vice President for Medical Education and Publishing at ACP.  Prior to his positions at ACP, Dr. Weinberger was on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for 26 years. At various times during his career in Boston, he served as Executive Director of the Carl J. Shapiro Institute for Education and Research at Harvard Medical School and BIDMC, as Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine at BIDMC, as Chief of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division at BIDMC, and as Professor of Medicine and Faculty Associate Dean for Medical Education at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Weinberger is the recipient of multiple teaching awards at Harvard. He has also received the Clinical Educator Award from the American Thoracic Society’s Clinical Problems Assembly and the Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award from Alpha Omega Alpha and the Association of American Medical Colleges. In addition to authoring the popular Principles of Pulmonary Medicine, now in its 6th edition and available in several foreign languages, he has written numerous original and review articles as well as multiple chapters for leading textbooks of internal medicine, including Cecil’s Textbook of Medicine.

In addition to his areas of interest in medical education, Dr. Weinberger’s area of special clinical interest is interstitial lung disease, especially sarcoidosis.
