Almost every chapter in this eighth edition of a comprehensive review of ocular pathology has been extensively revised to reflect the many new developments in the field, including updates based on the American Joint Committee on Cancer’s ocular melanocytic lesions staging, the latest developments in retinopathy of prematurity, and in-depth analysis of the latest genetic developments. The previous edition was published in 2015.

Purpose

The intent is to provide a complete, yet concise reference for board review as well as clinical practice.

Audience

The intended audience is medical students and residents in both ophthalmology and ocular pathology, as well as practicing ophthalmologists and pathologists.

Features

The 18 chapters cover basic principles, congenital anomalies, nongranulomatous and granulomatous inflammation, surgical and nonsurgical trauma, skin and the lacrimal drainage system, conjunctiva, cornea and sclera, uvea, lens, sensory retina, vitreous, optic nerve, orbit, diabetes mellitus, glaucoma, ocular melanocytic neoplasms, and retinoblastoma. Chapters use a bulleted format that detail brief, salient points of general information, ocular findings, systemic findings, and histology. Each chapter contains numerous new additions including complications of Zika virus, updates based on the Cancer Staging Manual, 8th edition, Amin (Springer, 2017), and updated genetic and molecular information. The photos are high quality and include clinical, gross pathological, microscopic (hematoxylin and eosin, special stains, and immunohistochemical stains) as well as numerous electron microscopy photos.

Assessment

This edition contains important updates to staging information, molecular advances, and new diagnostic concerns. Overall, both the print copy and the online version are excellent and provide a concise overview of the disease process, from clinical information to histology. However, the online version has some additional features, most notably the list of what diagnoses are contained within each broader chapter heading. This feature makes it much easier to locate a specific disease entity or a differential of disease entities. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested or practicing in the field of ocular pathology.
