This is the third edition of a book that aims to be a comprehensive manual for the upper-extremity surgeon. This edition is accompanied by an online version that enables easy access from a mobile device and contains several videos demonstrating surgical procedures. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose
In the preface, Dr. Trumble states that goal of the book is to “distill the intangible intuitions” of experienced surgeons to create a guide for all upper-extremity surgeons. His intent is to help surgeons learn from seasoned veterans, and perhaps to help them avoid some of the traps and pitfalls that have already been chanced upon by others. The editors and a number of contributing authors certainly are authorities in the field and they do an excellent job achieving their stated goal.
Audience
The book targets upper-extremity surgeons at all levels in their careers. The chapters start with the basics and then delve into the finer nuances of each subject – as a result they serve as a good resource for someone unfamiliar with a specific topic as well those wishing to brush up on their knowledge, or gain a fresh perspective on a topic.
Features
The book attempts to cover the entire range of upper extremity conditions and treatments from the elbow to the fingertips. The title does an excellent job accomplishing this although at times the reader may find that they need additional details about a topic or procedure. The adequate and relevant citations make it easy to seek out primary evidence and further information when required.
Assessment
Overall, this book is excellent. Trainees and young upper-extremity surgeons certainly will find it useful, while more advanced surgeons will find it a very helpful reference for less familiar topics.
