Description
This updated comprehensive reference covers core topics in emergency medicine, must-know clinical presentations, pathophysiology, diagnoses, and management principles, supplemented by diagrams, algorithms, radiographic images, and clinical photographs. An accompanying website includes 13 online-only chapters, five videos, review questions, and access to an ebook version. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a “fresh, directive, and current, defining reference in our specialty [of emergency medicine].” Given the breadth and evolution of the specialty, this is a lofty and worthy goal. This edition includes the most recent evidence-based principles and chapters to reflect new topics of importance. The authors are successful in presenting a large amount of clinically important information in a very readable format.
Audience
This is intended for a broad audience including “specialist emergency medicine physicians, other physicians, residents, and other trainees, and a variety of nonphysician practitioners.” It is relevant to those practicing in an emergency department setting as well as critical care and urgent care settings. The authors are emergency medicine clinicians practicing at programs around country, who are experts in their respective topics.
Features
The book describes the fundamentals of the workup and care of common and uncommon presentations, the critically ill, and special populations. Chief complaints are divided into those related to trauma, medicine/surgery, environment, and special populations/practice settings. Each includes a review of epidemiology and pathophysiology, diagnostic approach and algorithm, and empiric management. The colorful flow diagrams and algorithms, tables, and radiographic and clinical photographs greatly enhance readability and applicability to clinical practice. Chapters conclude with a review of key concepts that aid in solidifying readers’ understanding. The electronic/online content supplements the text with useful videos, additional chapters and clinical images, and chapter review questions.
Assessment
This is widely regarded as one of the most authoritative books in the field of emergency medicine. Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAM) has been gaining popularity as a widely accessible and easily consumable resource. In general, FOAM focuses on the diagnosis and management of specific and often high-level topics rather than more common, basic presentations. Readers will find this book an invaluable resource for gaining mastery of core content and fundamentals of the specialty. It might be considered a must-read for new trainees and excellent resource for more seasoned providers looking for a review of the fundamentals.
Doody’s Review Service Weighted Numerical Score: 98 – 5 Stars!
Rosen’s has been the Gold Standard since I entered the field of emergency medicine in the late eighties. The 9th. Ed. definitely lives up to the standard set by its predecessors. I strongly recommended this book to anyone starting a career in emergency medicine to seasoned professionals in the field. A must have!
