Purpose

The purpose is to provide a comprehensive review, in atlas format, of all aspects of abdominal wall hernia repair. This is one of the most common problems that general surgeons face on a daily basis. This book and its online version are a great value, and having access to both makes it extremely convenient for readers.

Audience

This is a wonderful book for residents and general surgeons, although it also could be useful to medical students. Plastic surgeons involved in abdominal wall reconstructions may find it useful as well. The editor and authors are well known in the field.

Features

This book covers the anatomy, techniques, and steps of simple repairs and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. The anatomy of the abdominal wall is clearly explained. Sections deal with laparoscopic repairs (including parastomal hernia), open repairs, repair of unusual hernias, and separation of components. The book also covers patient selection and preparation for surgery.

As befits an atlas, the book is lavishly illustrated with clear color drawings and operative photographs, supplemented by videos on the accompanying website.

Assessment

This is a lavishly illustrated and comprehensive review of abdominal wall hernias and various approaches to the surgical management of these hernias. The book is well written and is easy to browse. The associated web resources significantly enhance the value of the book.
