Description

This is the fifth edition of a book aimed at both trainees and practitioners who care for urology patients. It reviews the diagnosis, prevention, and management of complications of urological surgery. An ebook version is available with this edition, which can be easily accessed on the web or with a mobile device. The previous edition was published in 2009.

Purpose

Many surgical books are step-by-step instruction manuals on how to perform specific surgeries. While these are important, they commonly fail to review in depth how to prepare for surgery and how to manage postoperative complications.

This book successfully addresses these issues, taking a proactive approach by educating and preparing providers on how to prevent and mange complications before they occur.

Audience

The audience includes all residents and practitioners who take care of urological patients. Although the majority of readers may be part of the urology team, managing urological complications often requires a multidisciplinary approach, and this book may be helpful to anesthesiologists, general surgeons, gynecologists, and plastic surgeons as well. The authors and contributors are prominent physicians in their respective urological subspecialties.

Features

This is a well-rounded and complete evaluation of complications of urological surgery. It starts with detailed descriptions of how to evaluate patient comorbidities prior to surgery and manage perioperative complications. It is comprehensive, specifically addressing complicated patients: obese, pregnant, transgender, irradiated, and pediatric. The book is conveniently organized by procedure type (ambulatory, endourological, laparoscopic/robotic, extirpative, reconstructive, and pediatric). High-quality, relevant images and illustrations augment the text.

Assessment

This is a valuable book/ebook for all providers who care for urological patients. Every provider who has a book on how to perform urological surgery should also have an accompanying book, such as this one, that helps to guide the preoperative and postoperative management of patients. This book also helps providers to proactively understand and anticipate potential problems before they occur. This edition includes relevant updates, such as the management of complications of gender confirmation surgery.
