Description
This book covers topics in oral radiology and how to interpret several types of diagnostic images. It includes a plethora of images from different types of radiographs and angles that are helpful in describing dental radiology to physicians and other non-dentists. The previous edition was published in 2017.
Purpose
The book’s purpose is to help radiologists and dentists who are using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) technology in their offices. Now more than ever, general dentists are using CBCT for implant placement, endodontics, and other diagnostics and treatment planning. It is helpful for those studying for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologists exam and as a companion text to Diagnostic Imaging: Head and Neck, 4th Edition, Koch et. al. (Elsevier, 2022). These are worthy objectives, and the book is very much needed. It is a touchstone for the general dentist needing a reference text and could be used for dental students and residents who are refining their proficiency with radiologic interpretation.
Audience
The book’s primary audience is medical radiologists and general dentists who are using CBCT technology in their offices. This text is written in such a way that helps medical doctors understand dental terminology; in that sense, it is also helpful for instructing dental students about the basics of dental radiology and interpretation. The book meets and exceeds the needs of its intended audience and sets a new standard for a dental radiology text. The author is a credible authority on the subject as a recognized expert with credentials and publications.
Features
This book covers the full breadth of oral and maxillofacial radiology, from the basics of the teeth and oral structures to clinical implications and applications. The most exceptional subject area is the anatomy chapter that guides the reader seamlessly through the entire oral cavity, head, and neck. This chapter uses several types of imaging to showcase applications, such as periapical, panoramic, along with CBCT to help the reader with diagnosis. The color illustrations are high quality as well and are immensely helpful learning aids. In addition, the chapters on diagnosis build on the foundations from the anatomy section and solidify the power in this text. While this work is exceptionally strong, one shortcoming could be a lack of guidance for user error and correction in imaging. This might help practitioners in determining if an artifact is user error or significant.
Assessment
This is a high-quality work that is much needed for the current clinical landscape in dentistry and medicine. It will greatly help in a hospital setting when medical radiologists need to interpret a possible dental or maxillofacial causation for an illness and also help the general dentist in complex treatment planning and case selection. It is an outstanding work that eclipses other texts in this same subject area such as Principles of Dental Imaging, 2nd Edition, Langland et. al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2002). It is comparable to Brant and Helms’ Fundamentals of Diagnostic Radiology, 5th Edition, Klein et. al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2019) but focused on the oral and maxillofacial. This book is the third edition and has enough updated chapters to justify the need to replace the previous edition. CBCT technology in dentistry has been improving at such an astronomical rate that future editions should be expected sooner rather than later.
