Description

This book is a foundational text for practitioners of neonatal medicine, with an emphasis on high-quality evidence-based care. This comprehensive reference text includes topics on the origins of the field of neonatology, pathophysiology of neonatal diseases, and clinical recommendations for neonatal care. There is an accompanying ebook that has been faithfully adapted to an online format. The previous edition was published in 2019.

Purpose

The purpose of this book is to compile comprehensive and current evidence-based medical knowledge to aid the student or practitioner of neonatal medicine in providing high-quality individualized care. This reference text has long been a pillar in neonatal-perinatal education, with updates necessary to reflect rapid advances in neonatal medicine research and clinical practices. The addition of a companion ebook is welcome, as each subsequent edition adds substantially to the size of the two-volume set. While not adding any additional content, the online version is imminently more portable and easier to search. The book meets its objectives by incorporating foundational and current literature, a wide scope of respected authors, and practical clinical knowledge. What results is a comprehensive reference book for those looking to provide evidence-based care in neonatal medicine.

Audience

This book’s primary audience is students or practitioners in the field of neonatal-perinatal medicine. This is an essential reference text for the neonatology fellow or neonatologist. In addition to a comprehensive review of historical, legal, and ethical aspects of the field of neonatology, the book covers a wide range of conditions in the neonatal intensive care unit. The book serves as an indispensable source of knowledge for those providing care to neonates. Dozens of authors that are well-respected and well-published in their respective fields have contributed to this book.

Features

The book begins with a review of the field of neonatology, including ethical considerations, advancements in the field, and a global perspective on care of neonates. The text moves logically through fetal development, pregnancy, and delivery room and neonatal intensive unit care. Subsequently the book is divided into sections based on organ systems, allowing for ease in navigation. It is comprehensive but not overly burdened by excessive details. It provides current clinical information and is easily utilized as a reference if a practitioner has a question regarding a specific topic or to enhance learning in general. The chapters are well-written and thorough, and the tables and images enhance understanding and highlight key points. Each subsequent edition adds new chapters and revises old chapters to include updated information. This is an expected consequence of a growing body of information but results in a rather unwieldy physical textbook even when divided into two volumes.

Assessment

Fanaroff and Martin continue to produce a high-quality, comprehensive book intended to enhance the practice of evidence-based neonatal-perinatal medicine. It is intuitively organized in a manner which serves its audience, allowing learners and practitioners to obtain general information or focus on specific topics. Compared to other neonatal reference texts, this guide incorporates more clinical and practical applications of knowledge. Now on its twelfth edition, the growing size of the text demonstrates the necessity of continuing to update the book. The field of neonatology continues to undergo rapid developments, requiring new editions if the title is to remain relevant to clinical practice. The numerous references to literature published within the last five years demonstrate the commitment to providing a comprehensive source of updated evidence-based material to facilitate learning and practical care of neonates.
