Description
This book provides a practical overview of in-office corneal procedures. It covers corneal conditions that may require in-office procedures, their diagnostic process, medical therapy, and procedures including selection, supplies, technique, and pictures or videos.
Purpose
Office-based surgery is becoming more common in the medical field. Procedures previously performed in the ambulatory center are now sometimes transitioned to the clinic setting to reduce cost and improve efficiency and patient care. The book provides the necessary guidance on when and how to perform the various in-office procedures, including instruments required, patient positioning, and best approaches.
Audience
This book includes common conditions and procedures targeted toward general ophthalmologists and complex cases geared toward corneal specialists. It can also be a helpful reference book for optometrists on subjects including medical management, basic procedures such as amniotic membrane placement, and knowing when to make a referral for surgical intervention. The authors of this book are ophthalmologists, many of whom work in academic medical centers in the cornea and refractive surgery departments.
Features
This book is organized by conditions encountered in-office, including ocular surface conditions, post-refractive and corneal surgery complications, and complex and urgent cases. Each condition includes an overview and several cases that discuss the medical management and in-office procedure options. The procedures are detailed with techniques, supplies, pictures, and clinical pearls. A number of videos of the procedures are available within the ebook.
When available, the book includes reference tables and decision-making algorithm. The appendix of the book provides easy reference to various procedures.
Assessment
This is an excellent reference book to have in the clinic. It supplements The Wills Eye Manual, 8th Edition, Gervasio and Peck (Wolters Kluwer, 2021) in the anterior-segment conditions. This book expands on the decision-making process for medical and surgical management and provides guidance on how to perform the procedures.
