By: Farahnak Assadi

ISBN: 9780443111136

Publication Date: March 21, 2023

Reviewer: Joseph Russell Hageman, MD (Comer Children’s Hospital)

Description

This book is a very practical, clinically useful series of concise cases presented for clinicians at all levels of training. An eBook version is included as well.

Purpose

The purpose of the book is to teach providers about the clinical presentation of fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base disorders in the pediatric population (e.g., hyponatremia). Case presentations are followed by multiple-choice answers to explain the etiology of clinical disorders. Once the book establishes etiology, it explains the clinical characteristics and management. The objectives are worthy and met.

Audience

The audience is clinicians at all levels of training, including students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians. Providers such as nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants can all learn from this excellent collection of clinically relevant cases. The editor is a recognized expert with almost 50 years of experience.

Features

This casebook is organized in the table of contents by clinical disorder, from hyponatremia to hypermagnesemia. It contains 13 chapters with several clinical cases, including different etiologies of hypo- and hypernatremia, hypo- and hyperkalemia, metabolic alkalosis and acidosis, hypo- and hypercalcemia, hypo- and hyperphosphatemia, and hypo- and hypermagnesemia. For example, the hyponatremia chapter contains 18 clinical cases with references listed at the end of the chapter.

Assessment

This is an excellent casebook for pediatric fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base disorders. It is geared toward clinicians at all levels of training, and the group of cases refreshed my memory, even though I have been a clinician and educator for 45 years. I also learned new etiologies for hyponatremia. I highly recommend this casebook, and I believe readers will enjoy learning and reviewing the clinical information.
