Purpose

The purpose of this book is to serve as a study guide and assessment of knowledge for residents preparing to take their certifying board exam for dermatology. It also acts as a painless way to refresh and renew the knowledge base for dermatologists who finished residency years ago.

The audience is dermatology residents.

Features

The book presents a test format with photographs of patients’ clinical presentations or histology accompanied by questions. The book assumes that users can already make a proper diagnosis and instead questions address underlying complications, treatments, and associated abnormalities associated with the disease. At the end of each section of questions there is a comprehensive explanation of the correct answers and a brief discussion as to why the incorrect choices are wrong. This is a strong study guide for reinforcing and mastering critical and nit-picky dermatology information, as well as identifying knowledge gaps. The color photographs are of excellent quality. The book offers an accurate representation of what to expect on the certifying exam and the deductive thinking process demanded to successfully pass the exam.

Assessment

This book can serve as a study guide for the large, 2-volume textbook Dermatology, 5th Edition, Bolognia et al. (Elsevier, 2024) as the references cited for the majority of the answers point to this text. As new information arises, a new version of this self-assessment guide will always have a place.
