Description
This is the seventh edition of a comprehensive introductory pathology book. The previous edition was published in 2013.
Purpose
The intent is to provide a concise introduction to basic principles of cell and molecular biology, mechanisms of disease, and the pathological findings associated with important diagnoses in each organ system.
Audience
The book is intended primarily for medical students, especially those in their preclinical years. Graduate students in related health science fields also may find it a useful reference for understanding clinical and pathological features of the diseases studied in their labs.
Features
The 26 chapters are grouped into three parts that cover basic pathology, disease mechanisms, and systemic pathology. The first two parts attempt to build a foundation of broad principles that help readers appreciate the later chapters. The later chapters are separated by organ system and cover commonly encountered pathologies of each system. The book also uses many diagrams and tables throughout to help organize content. Each chapter also contains many high-quality images of relevant gross and microscopic findings. The index is detailed, accurate, and undoubtedly enhances the overall utility of the book.
Assessment
This is an excellent resource for medical students throughout both the didactic and clinical portions of their training. The breadth and organization of the material make it a valuable introductory book for learning pathology that can also be used to review a topic later in training. This book is very similar to other comprehensive introductory pathology textbooks. However, it does include more electronic content and additional information on the role of pathology in patient care that is not addressed in comparable books. Additionally, the authors recognize the accelerating role genetics and genomics play in our understanding of disease and have accordingly expanded on these topics in this edition.
