Description
This fifth edition textbook covers the essential principles, evaluation, and multidisciplinary clinical and surgical management of pelvic floor disorders.
As a timely update to the previous edition from 2015, this all-encompassing resource provides clinically oriented guidance for numerous conditions and illustrates surgical procedures in a detailed atlas-style format. Features that enhance the presentation, readability, and educational value of this textbook include well-organized chapter outlines and headings, treatment algorithms, hundreds of illustrative images and figures, and supplemental video links.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a comprehensive educational core reference that compiles information and knowledge from diverse sources and medical disciplines for providers caring for patients with pelvic floor disorders. The authors accomplish this goal by uniquely combining basic principles with practical aspects of patient care and clinical decision-making to aid clinicians and surgeons in the day-to-day assessment and management of conditions routinely encountered in urogynecology practice. The book begins with basic anatomy and physiology, then logically guides readers through evaluation and management of various conditions. In addition, urodynamics and surgical procedures are extensively described and illustrated with links to supplemental videos.
Audience
The book is suitable for post-graduate trainees, fellows, mid-level practitioners, and generalist or subspecialty physicians and surgeons in gynecology, urology, and other specialties that care for this patient population. For female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) fellows, it is an invaluable resource for learning during fellowship and for subspecialty board exam preparation. The editors are experts and leaders in the field of urogynecology and are well known on national and international scales for their research contributions, society leadership, and editor positions in high-impact journals. Many of the contributing authors are also recognized authorities in the field.
Features
The textbook has 41 chapters distributed into eight major sections that cover basic science, evaluation, stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, defecatory dysfunction, surgical complications, other conditions, and research methods. There is excellent chapter organization; a new feature includes page numbers in the chapter outline for quick reference and convenience. There are abundant color-coded boxes and tables to highlight important concepts and information, and an all-new video library of anatomy, urodynamics, and surgical procedures. Many chapters have updated sections and more high-quality images.
There is a new well-done urology chapter that discusses common urologic problems and ureteral stents. Case presentations on urodynamics serve to engage readers and place the material in clinical context. Treatment algorithms incorporate current evidence-based guidelines. The book is about 8.5 x 11 inches in size and weighs a couple of pounds, and there is an e-version available as a mobile resource. The inside cover has a unique scratch-off code that allows access to the enhanced digital online content. Account creation and access is simple. The videos are easy to navigate and are identified by chapter headings. There is high variability in supplemental video quality, and a few of the videos are dated. However, these issues are far outweighed by the sheer number, diversity, and high-yield educational value of the videos.
Assessment
This updated textbook presents advances from previous editions. It is the primary textbook for many FPMRS training programs and serves as an excellent reference for practitioners dealing with pelvic floor disorders. This book is a must-have for the intended audience, as there is no current competing resource that covers the material in such a comprehensive fashion with an extensive supplemental video library. The expertise of the editors and contributing authors, combined with the updated content and video library of surgical procedures, makes this book an essential addition to the literature.
