Description

This dermatology book has engaging writing in a format from which learning is a pleasure. The photos in previous editions of this book initially were in black and white and over many years have evolved into excellent color clinical photos. The previous edition was published five years ago.

Purpose

The purpose is to act as an up-to-date reference for dermatologists and residents that discusses current therapies and pathophysiology and genetic mutations in detail of all known skin conditions.

Audience

The audience is clinically-oriented dermatologists.

Features

The book comprises 33 chapters which begin with the basic structure and function of skin, and move to cutaneous signs and diagnosis including dermatoses resulting from injuries and neurocutaneous dermatoses to noninfectious immunodeficiency disorders. Following chapters cover mucinoses, papulosquamous and keratotic disorders, connective tissue diseases, acne, bacterial disorders, parasitic infections, and nutritional diseases. The book beautifully explains how to use a step ladder approach when choosing medications based on disease response. My favorite part of this book is the clinical photographs. The ebook version that allows for notetaking or having the text read aloud.

Assessment

This reference is a wonderful balance between dermatologic encyclopedic tomes such as Rook’s Textbook of Dermatology, 10th Edition, Griffiths et al. (Wiley-Blackwell, 2024) or Bolognia’s Dermatology, 5th Edition, Bolognia et al. (Elsevier, 2024) and quick look-up books that do not provide enough guidance in therapy or leave practitioners shorthanded in the depth of the immune pathways causing a disease. This book holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first dermatology books I purchased as a first-year resident at the recommendation of a colleague.
