By: William R. Jarnagin

ISBN: 9780323697842

Publication Date: October 12, 2022

Reviewer: Peter Nau, MD, MS, FACS (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)

Description

This seventh-edition book represents a worthy update to this classic hepatobiliary surgery text. Since the previous version was published in 2017, the book has been updated to include numerous color photographs and illustrations. It covers all important conditions and procedures in benign and malignant diseases of the liver and biliary tree, as well as the pancreas.

Purpose

The book’s purpose is to describe the anatomy, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) disorders. These are necessary objectives for the field and are well met by this new update.

Audience

The book is written at an advanced level for fellowship-trained HPB, transplant, and oncology surgeons, and remains a valuable reference and meets the needs of this audience. The authors and contributors represent the foremost experts in these fields, providing authoritative, state-of-the-art science in HPB surgery.

Features

This two-volume set includes chapters on the history and general perioperative considerations of HPB surgery before detailing benign and malignant disorders of the bile ducts, pancreas, and liver, and their surgical management. The book reviews the pathophysiology of each, including relevant molecular insights, at a level appropriate for practicing clinicians, without becoming bogged down in excessive basic science. The focus is decidedly clinical and geared towards surgical workup and management. The breadth is impressive, and the book covers all important disorders. The new edition contains many more color pictures and diagrams, which greatly contribute to the appearance and usefulness of the book. The bulk of the content concerns liver disease and surgery, including transplantation. More coverage of minimally invasive techniques has also been added since the previous version.

Assessment

In terms of biliary and liver surgery, this volume is an essential reference for practicing HPB surgeons. No other text covers such a range of conditions in a clinically accessible way. The level of detail is exactly what is needed to guide management; the book is thorough, without being longwinded or bloated.

The previous version was outstanding, but the revisions to this seventh edition represent a significant improvement for everyone in the field.
