Description

This has been the leading reference text for hand surgery since the first edition was produced 40 years ago. Naturally over time, approaches change and need to be modernized and Green’s has done exactly that with seven new editions (this being the eighth) since its original publication.

Purpose

The purpose of this book has always been to be THE go-to reference for hand surgery. This high standard has been maintained over the years and continues in the eighth edition.

Audience

The obvious audience is hand surgeons, which includes general surgeons, plastic surgeons, and orthopedic surgeons who perform hand surgery. It is a fundamental text in orthopedic training and should be a go-to reference for anyone performing hand surgery. Green’s has always been the established reference text, implying that its contributors and editors are the leaders in the field.

This has continued in this eighth edition.

Features

To cover the breadth of the topic, Green’s comes in two large volumes at over 1,000 pages each. The images are of the highest quality and the presentations are efficient, comprehensive, and thorough. Structurally, the book is organized by general topics including basic principles, hand, wrist, forearm, nerves, pediatric hand, reconstruction, and a potpourri of other disorders. To expand access to the reference, the purchase of the print book is accompanied by a complimentary e-book.

Assessment

There are a limited few “absolute” must-have books for an orthopedic library that are known in orthopedics by the name(s) of the lead author(s): Campbell’s, Rockwood and Green, and Green’s. Every institution that hosts surgeons who perform hand surgery should have the most recent edition of these titles. Every resident in orthopedic training should have access to Green’s and it should be the first book purchased by an orthopedic hand fellow. Active hand surgeons will always need the most up-to-date version.
