Description

This book covers various domains within the realm of pain medicine including pain mechanisms and common pain conditions with a particular focus on up-to-date evidence regarding treatments.

Purpose

The purpose of this book is to provide clinicians with a reference to assist them in optimizing individualized treatment plans by using current, evidence-based treatment options and management guidelines. These are worthy objectives. This book is certainly helpful as an up-to-date and concise reference that is usable on the day-to-day. It is an easy-to-read book for clinicians who would like to augment their knowledge in order to tailor their treatment for each unique patient.

Audience

This book is intended for and meets the needs of pain medicine practitioners and pain medicine trainees. The authors are credible authorities on the subject and many of them are recognized experts in the field.

Features

This book covers a myriad of topics within the scope of pain management. It starts with the basics of pain including pathophysiology and covers many of the common and specialized pain syndromes encountered in most pain practices. It integrates overviews on different treatment modalities as well. The book is concise yet clear. There are many high-quality images and tables that add to the explanation of multiple complex topics. The book is very much evidence based with multiple references. Color art, tables, and graphs highlight major points and supplement the text. It may be reasonable to add an extra chapter or an expanded section on dorsal root ganglion stimulation. It is noted in the “Neuropathic Pain” chapter, but this is a new and exciting technology that has been shown to be superior to spinal cord stimulation in managing CRPS. Additional topics that may increase the breadth would be peripheral nerve stimulation and minimally invasive spine procedures such as ablation of the basivertebral nerve and the various procedures to address lumbar spinal stenosis.

Assessment

This is an excellent book with a concise but relatively comprehensive overview of pain management. Its intention is to serve as a reference for clinicians to help guide individualized treatments for their patients as well as to aid trainees in knowledge acquisition. It is high quality and written in an easily digestible fashion for a busy clinician. There is excellent use of references and evidence.
