Description  

This fourth edition provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of pathology in the gastrointestinal tract and its related organs. The previous edition was published in 2014. 

Purpose  

This book aims to provide comprehensive and updated information on all aspects of disease in the gastrointestinal tract and its related organs. It is designed for pathologists and trainees to learn the relevant clinical and histologic features of diseases and provide guidance on how to approach complex biopsies. 

Audience  

The target audience is surgical pathologists and pathology residents and fellows. In addition to being a great resource for pathologists, this book also provides significant clinical correlates that may be relevant to gastroenterologists and surgeons as well. 

Features  

The book is divided into three parts that cover the gastrointestinal tract (part 1); gallbladder, extrahepatic biliary tract, and pancreas (part 2); and liver (part 3). Part 1 is further divided into six sections including general pathology, inflammatory disorders, polyps, epithelial neoplasms, nonepithelial neoplasms, and anal pathology. The general pathology section includes diseases that affect the entire gastrointestinal tract and is divided into chapters that include infectious, autoimmune, systemic illnesses, developmental, vascular, and drug-induced disorders. Sections 2-4 (inflammatory, polyps, and epithelial neoplasms, respectively) are organized by organ. Section 5 (nonepithelial neoplasms) is divided into mesenchymal tumors and hematolymphoid tumors. 

Section 6 (anal pathology) is one chapter that includes inflammatory and neoplastic disorders of the anal canal. Part 2 begins with an algorithmic approach to pancreatic disorders. Subsequent chapters include normal histology, molecular, cytology, developmental disorders, infectious, inflammatory, and benign and malignant tumors. Similar to part 2, part 3 also begins with an algorithmic approach to medical liver biopsies. Subsequent chapters include normal histology, molecular, and cytology, followed by chapters on “medical liver” that include hepatitis, autoimmune and cholestatic disorders, drug-induced disorders, fatty liver, cirrhosis, vascular, and transplant. This part ends with benign and malignant tumors of the liver. Every chapter includes great quality images of gross findings as well as histologic features and cytology. There are many useful figures and tables, including summaries of key features, immunohistochemistry, and comparisons of differential diagnoses. 

There are also great illustrated schematics that outline anatomy and staging. 

Assessment   

In comparison to the previous edition, this current one has one new chapter on the “Algorithmic Approach to Diagnosis of Pancreatic Disorders.” Other chapters have been expanded to include the most recent updates in molecular findings and immunohistochemistry. Tables and images have been updated and additional clinical information has been added. Overall, this is an incredibly comprehensive textbook that has all the information pathologists would possibly want to know about the gastrointestinal tract and its related organs. It is far more in-depth on the clinical features than any other gastrointestinal pathology textbook. It also includes other relevant information to pathology, such as tissue processing techniques, anatomy, grossing, and cytology. The chapters on algorithmic approaches to challenging biopsies are particularly helpful for trainees. This book is ideal for pathologists and trainees who wish to have all their gastrointestinal tract pathology information in one resource.
