Interview with Brian J. Cole & Jorge Chahla
How has Surgical Techniques of the Shoulder, Elbow, and Knee in Sports Medicine evolved since the previous edition? How has it evolved since the first edition?
The book has significantly evolved since its inception. In this 3rd edition we introduce the newest cutting-edge surgical techniques, provided by world renowned sports-medicine surgeons. Due to the exponential growth of knowledge in our field, in this new edition the authors provide the most up-to-date presentation of the current and relevant clinical literature and technical pearls and pitfalls. We deemed it appropriate to update the previous version with more updated data-driven treatment algorithms as well as new treatment approaches. This book places a strong emphasis on recent evidence-based rehabilitation and return to sports protocols.
What is the most exciting aspect of the new edition? What chapter or topic covered in the are you most excited about?
In this new edition we introduce a new chapter format that provides concise chapters with clinical images, illustrations, and videos. We are thrilled by the amazing cooperation of our team of authors. The chapters were created by an unparalleled list of world experts in our field. We are thankful for all the esteemed authors who invested significant time and effort to produce this amazing resource. Their willingness to share and provide their unique personal insights, tips, and tricks will make this book invaluable to its readers.
We are proud to include many novel surgical techniques and treatment algorithms including different surgical techniques for the management of glenoid and humeral head bone loss, arthroscopic superior capsular reconstruction, new treatments to address cartilage lesions of the knee, and the use of orthobiologics for various pathologies.
Who will find the greatest value from this book and why? Has the audience changed since the book first published?
We believe this book is intended for residents, fellows, general orthopedists, sports medicine specialists, and anyone who is interested in our field, whether it is physician assistants, nurses, researchers, and others. Regardless of the level of the reader’s expertise we believe they will benefit from the most up to date information provided in one site. The book summarizes important clinical questions and proposes conservative and surgical approaches based on the latest evidence. The quality and diversity of the new cast of authors of this edition makes this book an indispensable resource for the sports medicine surgeon.
What new ideas, practices, or procedures would you like to highlight for the new edition?
Novel biologic approaches for the treatment of a variety of sports medicine conditions were added and updated in this new edition. Many surgical techniques have been updated to reflect current practices. Our expert authors transparently share their top secrets from the operating room, providing new things to learn even for seasoned and highly trained professionals.
In this book you will find chapters detailing novel surgical techniques including distal tibial allograft for shoulder instability, biologics in rotator cuff repair, tendon transfers around the shoulder, ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, cartilage restoration techniques including microfracture-plus techniques, correction osteotomies around the knee, complex multi-ligament reconstructions, trochleoplasty, lateral patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, and many more topics.
What problem do you hope the future generation of your specialty will be able to solve?
A rapidly evolving field such as sports medicine should focus on improved indications and patient selection that might be improved through data-driven artificial intelligence tailoring different approaches and personalized decision-making, and greater procedural accuracy through robotics or augmented reality, with shortened recovery times. The preliminary results we see from surgeons and researchers worldwide implementing these cutting-edge tools is extremely encouraging and suggest we will soon embark on a new dawn of personalized computer-assisted patient care.
Is there anything else about the book you’d like to say?
We have witnessed a remarkable improvement in our understanding, techniques and outcomes of sports medicine conditions. This book will become the most recent and comprehensive resource for our specialty for years to come. We trust that this new edition will enrich our readers and instill the same passion as its authors have provided through their contributions.
