Hematopathology, 3rd Edition

By: Jaffe, Elaine S., MD; Arber, Daniel A., MD; Campo, Elias, MD, PhD; Orazi, Attilio, FRCPath; Quintanilla-Martinez, Leticia, MD; Rimsza, Lisa M., MD

ISBN: 9780323831659

Publication Date: September 3, 2024

Reviewer: Anamarija Perry, MD (University of Michigan Medical School)

Description

This book covers reactive and neoplastic disorders of lymphoid organs and tissues and bone marrow. The previous edition was published in 2017. This edition adopts the 2022 International Consensus Classification (ICC).

Purpose

The aim of this updated edition is to provide a concise, up-to-date, and practical review of hematopathology. The book achieves its stated goals.

Audience

This book will be useful to anyone who interprets lymphoid tissue and bone marrow biopsies, including hematopathologists, surgical pathologists, pathology residents, and hematopathology fellows. Clinical hematologists and fellows will also find it useful.

Features

The book contains five parts divided into 59 chapters. The first part covers technical aspects of hematopathology, such as the processing of the lymph node biopsy specimen and different ancillary methods (e.g., immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, molecular studies). Part II covers normal histology of hematopoietic tissues as well as reactive conditions. The largest third part focuses on lymphoid neoplasms including mature B-, T- and NK-cell neoplasm and precursor B- and T-cell neoplasms. Part IV covers myeloid, histiocytic, and related proliferations, while Part V covers immunodeficiency disorders. The book concludes with a comprehensive index. The book covers each entity in a systematic fashion that includes descriptions of morphologic, immunophenotypic, and clinical features, along with relevant genetic findings. It is richly illustrated with numerous microscopic images of great quality. Numerous useful tables complement the text, which describe salient features of some entities or compare different diagnoses. Each chapter concludes with a box of pearls and pitfalls and a list of selected key references. A complete list of references is available online.

Assessment

This book remains one of the must-haves for anyone signing out hematopathology specimens. It is comprehensive and appropriate for all levels of expertise, and it is a great learning resource for hematopathology fellows. The section on differential diagnosis is particularly useful for everyday sign-out. Although the book uses 2022 ICC, it incorporates the terminology used by the fifth edition of World Health Organization (WHO) Classification, and, when appropriate, discusses the rationale for the preferred ICC terminology adopted by this book. Moreover, Chapter 12 features a table that provides detailed comparison of current classification systems for lymphoid neoplasm. The microscopic images are appropriate and include not only usual, but also rare morphologic variants for many entities. This book will benefit all hematopathologists, as well as surgical pathologists who sign out hematopathology specimens.

Atlas of Diagnostic Hematology, 1st Edition

By: Mohamed Salama, MD

ISBN: 9780323567381

Pub Date: November 16, 2020

Reviewed by: Valerie L. Ng, PhD, MD (Alameda County Medical Center/Highland Hospital)

Description

This book is a companion atlas and case-based guide to Hematology: Basic Principles and Practice, 7th edition, Hoffman et al. (Elsevier, 2017). The website contains essentially most of the contents of this book.

Purpose

The purpose of this book is to provide “case-based, case-like formats integrating ancillary work-up as well as diagnostics algorithms” for primarily neoplastic hematology/Hematopathology. These are worthy objectives met by this book. The online presentation adds value by allowing virtual access from anywhere and by presenting the figures in glorious full color and adjustable size.

Audience

This book is intended for “current trainees, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior to senior clinical and scientific faculty in pathology and hematology/oncology.” It will also be of interest to medical laboratory scientists (in training or in practice) working in these specialized areas of the clinical laboratory (e.g., flow cytometry, cytogenetics, molecular testing, hematology, etc.). This book meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors are well-respected authorities.

Assessment

This is a great addition to the current offerings of clinical hematology or Hematopathology atlases, filling a specialized and practical niche where these clinical services intersect in real life (e.g., tumor boards). The online version makes it very easy to access and enhance learning in real-time during such multidisciplinary conferences.

Diagnostic Pathology: Lymph Nodes and Extranodal Lymphomas, 3rd Edition

By: Jeffery L. Medeiros & Roberto N.  Miranda

ISBN: 9780323847582

Publication Date: December 28, 2022

Reviewer: Anamarija Perry, MD (University of Michigan Medical School)

Description

This book is part of the Diagnostic Pathology Series, covering benign and malignant lesions of lymph nodes, as well as extranodal lymphomas. This third edition has been updated from the previous version, published in 2017, according to the most recent fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Hematolymphoid Tumors.

Purpose

The purpose of the book is to provide a systematic, easy-to-use reference in hematopathology. The book has reached its stated objective.

Audience

The book is written for surgical pathologists and hematopathologists, as well as pathology trainees (residents and hematopathology fellows).

Features

The book is divided into 12 sections. The first three sections cover benign conditions involving lymph nodes, while the rest of the sections deal with non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas. Separate sections are dedicated to immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferation, granulocytic/histiocytic tumors, and nonhematopoietic proliferations in lymph nodes. Characteristic of the Diagnostic Pathology series, the book provides clinical and histologic features, results of relevant ancillary studies, and a differential diagnosis for each entity in an easy-to-read, bulleted format. It is generously illustrated, and each entity includes multiple associated images, histology, as well as images of ancillary studies, including flow cytometry histograms and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) images, when pertinent. Figure legends nicely describe the salient features of each entity. After each entity, the book provides a list of references, selected for relevance. The end of the book contains a comprehensive index.

Assessment

Since its first edition, this book has been a favorite lymph node pathology text among trainees and practicing pathologists alike. Compared to other lymph node pathology texts on the market, this book is unique in its easy-to-read, bulleted format. Concise yet comprehensive, it is an ideal, quick, “on the scope” reference during sign-out. One of the best features of the book is the microscopic images, which are plentiful, well-curated, and of excellent quality. The book is so well illustrated that it can be used as an atlas. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in lymph node/lymphoma pathology.

Hematopathology, 3rd Edition

By: Eric D. Hsi, MD

ISBN: 978-0-323-47913-4

Pub Date:1-Feb-18

Description

This is the third edition of a comprehensive textbook of hematopathology covering the “essentials of what all practicing pathologists want and need to know about the rapidly evolving group of neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders.” This edition includes access to an online version. The previous edition was published in 2012.

Purpose

The purpose is to provide a contemporary hematopathology textbook reflecting recent changes in guidelines, diagnostic schema, and practice. The book meets these worthy objectives well.

Audience

The intended audience is practicing hematopathologists, but the book also would be of great value to hematopathology fellows, laboratory medicine or pathology residents in training, clinical hematology and oncology fellows or practitioners, and clinical laboratory scientists (CLSs) in practice or in training who are involved in bone marrow acquisition and specimen preparation.

Features

This is a fabulous book. It truly covers all areas of hematopathology. The photomicrographs are simply stunning, both in the print version and in “living color” in the online version. The color compensation is virtually perfect. Of note, all references are listed in the online version only. Much appreciated is the inclusion of the 2016 revision to the WHO classification of myeloid neoplasms and acute leukemia, just one of many recent and rapid changes in this field. I perhaps expected too much as I was disappointed that the book is missing the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and American Society of Hematology (ASH) joint guideline on the initial diagnostic workup of acute leukemia, which was published widely just a few months ago (October 2017).

Undoubtedly it will be in the next edition. I was irked that the chapter on hemostasis and thrombosis does not discuss the controversies around hypercoagulability testing given it has limited to no impact on treatment or management decisions (see recent review by Connors, N Engl J Med 2017; 377:1177-1187). Finally, I was surprised that the chapter on disorders of the spleen does not include a reference to or mention of hairy cell leukemia, given the profound splenomegaly associated with this disorder. But these are very minor criticisms and, overall, this is a most wonderful addition to this field.

Assessment

This is a great and much needed update for hematopathology. I would highly recommend it for practicing hematopathologists. Keep it in a well-guarded location so it doesn’t “walk” away.

Hematology: Basic Principles and Practice, 7th Edition

Description

This seventh edition of an authoritative reference on hematology includes access to an ebook version. The previous edition was published in 2013.

Purpose

Although the authors do not specifically state a purpose, the title is fully informative — it is a complete reference for hematology, spanning basic principles to clinical practice. Having the book both in print and online really enhances its value. The online version can be readily accessed via any mobile device “just in time,” and obviates the need to lug around this weighty tome (approximately 10 pounds). Both the book and website superbly achieve the desired objectives.

Audience

This book is appropriate for any health practitioner wanting detailed and definitive information about hematological conditions. Since it is so comprehensive, it is most suitable for fellows training in hematology/oncology or hematopathology, or any practicing hematologist/oncologist, laboratory medicine senior resident, fellow, or attending, or internists in practice who might want current and detailed information on hematological conditions. The authors and contributors are most credible authorities in their subject areas.

Features

The book covers all of hematology. It is truly comprehensive and awe inspiring. Pretty much everything you might want to know about anything hematological is in this book. The discussion of the pathophysiology of hematological disorders, spanning biochemistry to molecular to cellular to organ systems, is simply breathtaking in its enormity, accuracy, detail, and completeness. I very much appreciate the thoughtful and didactic approach — so refreshing in this day and age of educational material simplified into superficial bullet points. The book is divided into 13 major sections, with each section having multiple chapters covering all aspects of the general area. I could find detailed, esoteric information not easily retrieved by internet searches. For example I’ve been puzzling over a recent observation of a WBC with a “ring” nucleus. Couldn’t find anything online or in any of many atlases, until I found a picture of one in this book and learned it represented a dysplastic neutrophil and actually had an official name (“rodent cell!”). Wow, where else can you find this esoteric information? This book is a gold mine.

Assessment

Get this book. It is one of the best comprehensive references for clinical hematology.
