This is a first edition of a multi-authored reference on structural heart interventions. The authors are well known in their respective fields and come from reputable institutions such as Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Vanderbilt University, and more. 

Purpose 

The purpose of the book is to provide an up-to-date, evidence-based review of techniques and approaches for common and uncommon structural heart procedures. It also includes the basic pre-procedural workup and post-procedural care in certain cases. 

Audience 

The intended audience includes cardiology fellows, interventional trainees, and practicing cardiologists. The authors are well sought out leaders in the field of interventional cardiology. The content is credible and supported by sufficient references. 

Features 

The book features separate sections on aortic valve interventions, mitral valve interventions, ventricular septal interventions, tricuspid valves, pulmonary valves, ACHD interventions, and miscellaneous/variable anatomic positions. It covers various common and uncommon structural heart interventions such as TAVI/TAVR, valvuloplasty, valve-in-valve, valve-in-ring, left atrial appendage closure, VSD closure, PFO/ASD closure, paravalvular leak closure, and abnormal coronary/cardiac communications. The authors have used a consistent format to explain the procedure and walk the readers precisely through the scope of the problem, procedure/technique, and outcomes. The introductory chapter is about a building blocks approach as an effective training method for procedural learning. It Includes training tips and pitfalls from leading structural heart experts. The book has numerous illustrations that aid the readers in understanding the anatomy and step-by-step procedural nuances. The book also gives online access to more than 20 videos of interventional procedures, including assessment of patients for MitraClip, PFO/ASD closure, and aortic coarctation stenting. 

Assessment 

This is a great introductory reference for general cardiology and interventional trainees. The authors have done a commendable job of breaking down the content and walking the readers through every single step of the procedure. It gives a good outlook on the anticipated challenges and pitfalls and the building block approach for learning is unique.
