Description
Since its original edition, Surgery of the Knee by John Insall, this book has been both unique and one of the key go-to references for surgeons around the world on all issues related to the knee. It is a staple in most academic libraries. Compared to a myriad of other choices, this has always been unique in the concept that it presents “all things knee.” Many American surgeons are either joint surgeons or sports surgeons, while our international colleagues tend to be all things knee but not hip, ankle, or other body parts. This edition is accompanied by a website.
Purpose
It is designed to be a key reference on the knee and follows in the excellent tradition of the editions that preceded it. Many of us who are a bit more dated love the feel and ease of reference that a print book provides. This is a beautiful (inside and out) two-volume set that will be proudly displayed in your personal or institutional library. Nonetheless, modern day demands require more dynamic and flexible ease of access that only electronic versions can supply and all the information in this heavy, three-inch thick, two-volume set is only a click away.
Audience
Obviously, the book is targeted to a broad range of orthopedic surgeons ranging from residents to fellows, traumatologists and joint reconstruction specialists, to sports medicine specialists. The title is perfect in both declaring its purpose and including the heritage that precedes it. Ultimately, Norm Scott has brought together leaders from around the world to create one of the key references in the field.
Features
The book is easy to navigate with a comprehensive table of contents that guides readers to the concept or procedure that they wish to focus on. The book has not cut any corners, choosing to use high quality and high definition images that complement the text and ease the transfer of information.
Assessment
This is an excellent reference for adult reconstructive surgeons, trauma surgeons, and sports surgeons. It should not take you long to realize that I am a big fan of this book. It has always been a cornerstone of most academic libraries. If you are going to purchase only one book on the knee, this is it.
Once again, Scott and his cadre of contributors have done an excellent job of keeping us current and keeping this edition on a cutting-edge status, giving it distinct advantages over previous editions. I am proud to add this newest edition to my personal library and am 100% confident that it will be one of the most used references in our department library.
