Description

This is a well-written, highly detailed book illustrating all aspects of the cardiothoracic anesthesiologist’s role in perioperative management of the patient with cardiac disease. The online resource features the full-length text, detailed videos illustrating the use of TEE, and hyperlinked references. This is an update from the 2011 edition.

Purpose

The purpose is to enhance the perioperative management of patients with complex cardiac disease undergoing either cardiac or noncardiac surgery. An emphasis is placed on the expanding role of the cardiothoracic anesthesiologist in the perioperative care of high-risk cardiac patients undergoing all types of procedures. The book’s availability in both print and online versions enhances portability and provides added value in the hyperlinked references and online videos illustrating the standard TEE views and a wide variety of pathology.

Audience

The audience includes residents, fellows, and attending physician anesthesiologists. Dr. Kaplan is a respected and renowned physician in the cardiothoracic anesthesiology community and this book is effective at meeting the needs of the intended audience.

Features

The book covers all aspects of cardiothoracic anesthesiology including preoperative assessment, physiology, pharmacology, monitoring, transesophageal echocardiography, coagulation, specific cardiac procedures, extracorporeal circulation, postoperative pain management, and management of cardiac patients undergoing noncardiac procedures. Several detailed chapters cover TEE, which is nice for a book that provides as much information as this one. There are not many cardiac anesthesia books that go into as much detail as this one does. It is well organized and well written. It is also supported by a great many references that are all pertinent and current. Sample questions at the end of each chapter are often included in books, and would have been nice to include in this one.

Assessment

This is a very high quality book that covers all aspects of cardiothoracic anesthesiology. The online resources are valuable and easy to access. The updates to this edition are important in this constantly evolving field, particularly in the rapidly expanding areas of cardiac assist devices and minimally invasive procedures. Many books choose to focus on certain aspects of cardiac anesthesia and do not cover all aspects of the field in as detailed a fashion as this one does.
