Netter’s Introduction to Clinical Procedures
Description
This book leverages the extensive Netter collection of images to give overview images of how to set up and perform selected procedures on patients. An accompanying website includes an ebook version as well as other resources, including videos of procedures.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide an overview of what is commonly involved with a procedure that students will hear mentioned on rounds or in the clinic, but may have never seen performed.
Audience
The audience is primarily students and those responsible for teaching patient care and procedures in clinical rotations.
Features
Each of the 38 chapters outlines a specific procedure such as endotracheal intubation, sonography assessment of trauma, or arterial line placement.
Chapters provide an explanatory introduction and the relevant anatomy that must be understood, with many Netter depictions of the anatomy. The chapters define the indications for the procedure and the contraindications, and provide lists of equipment needed and descriptions of how the procedure is performed. Equally important are the sections on pitfalls of the procedure and discussions of the potential complications. Finally, there are selected references and review questions. The website adds 33 videos of selected procedures and sonograms.
Assessment
This is an outstanding book that uses the extraordinary Netter images that medicine has relied upon for decades to provide an overview of many of the common procedures encountered in medical practice.
