Description
Step-by-step print and video instructions on how to use injectable dermal fillers for facial, hand, neck, chest, and buttock, rejuvenation are outlined in the fourth edition of this book. The previous edition was published 2013. Since then newer fillers have been developed and FDA approval of indications has expanded.
Purpose
The purpose is to teach dermatologists proper injection techniques using dermal fillers.
Audience
The audience is cosmetic dermatologists.
Features
Many expert dermatological injectors offer their tips on how to successfully use dermal fillers. They discuss relevant anatomy, precautions to consider, and how to treat complications that may arise. The book could use some consistency in organization and explanations to increase clarity. For example, there are anatomic “zones” that are considered preferable for avoiding complications.
Some of the authors use facial diagrams to indicate these areas, while other authors choose to explain the areas in text only or by using a photo showing some markings without any explanation. The videos are well done, but the accompanying narration could be improved with a more detailed commentary. What does the injector want to feel with the cannula? How does one judge one is in the proper plane of injection? What does one watch for when injecting to insure it is being placed in the correct area (absent an intravascular event)?
Assessment
This is definitely one of the more complete references on soft tissue augmentation. I am still searching for one that has instructional videos that 100% clearly explain the techniques, from needle insertion, to injection rate, to what to do if the cannula does not slide easily, etc. All in all, this is a welcome resource for learning about dermal filler procedures.
