Description
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is an extremely distressing dermatologic disorder.
It is also difficult to treat. Often the diagnosis is not made until many years have passed, and all the while, patients suffer, developing painful abscesses, sinus tracts draining pus, and scarring. This reference book is completely devoted to hidradenitis suppurativa risk factors (genetics, lifestyle, sex, body mass index, etc.) to inform an earlier diagnosis so treatment can be instituted sooner, thus being proactive in reducing chronicity and complications of the disease.
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to provide the latest information on diagnosing and treating HS.
Audience
The intended audience is dermatologists.
Features
The chapter authored by Richard Bennett on excision techniques for HS is superb.
He describes how he performs the surgeries, provides tips for how to identify the problem tissue when it has deeper involvement, and lists hints on how to deal with potential complications. The book also includes comprehensive tables on antibiotic regimens and dosages. The discussions on the pathogenesis of HS are extremely detailed in noting the inflammatory pathways.
Assessment
This is a wonderful resource for clinicians struggling to treat patients with HS. It is well organized and written and doesn’t miss a beat. I wholeheartedly give it two thumbs up!
