Description

This book is a concise guide of commonly used procedures and tests in internal medicine and how medications are used or can interact with them. The accompanying website offers the ability to quickly read or save specific chapters electronically. Although rather basic, it offers everything a reader would need, and the electronic version integrates hyperlinks for references and other chapters seamlessly.

Purpose

The purpose of this book is to provide essential information regarding medical tests, procedures, and medications that is readily available and easy to comprehend. The authors mention that this type of information can be challenging to find, and they ensure accuracy and relevance to help with bedside clinical decision making. I agree with the authors and think they do a great job of compiling pertinent, easy-to-comprehend information related to the interaction of medications and medical procedures that are commonly used in internal medicine.

Audience

This book is for anyone in the medical field, especially medical providers, pharmacists, and students. It will likely be most useful to those who work in hospitals or ambulatory clinics, but any healthcare student would benefit from reading this book as well. As a clinical pharmacist working in the emergency department, I think this book is a fantastic source of information that would be useful when making clinical decisions on a daily basis. The authors are a credible group of medical experts in their specialties.

Features

This book provides useful information about how medications interact or should be managed in certain clinical situations, especially when related to specific tests or procedures used in everyday clinical medicine. The book covers over 50 of the most commonly used medical procedures. As a pharmacist, I am familiar with most, but they were not a traditional part of my education or training.

This is definitely a nice supplement to my knowledge while combining my specific expertise as a medication expert. The content presented is clinically relevant and accurate, including the most up-to-date, evidence-based recommendations. The book even includes useful notes describing current clinical debates or controversial scenarios. It comes with access to an ebook, which is easy to sign up for and mirrors the detailed information in the hard copy. The authors provide “rules of thumb” that are used in clinical practice and may be difficult to find in medical literature.

Assessment

The quality of this book is very good. It is up to date and accurate as of the publication date and will be beneficial to anyone practicing clinical medicine or learning to practice clinical medicine. I am a reader who prefers the print version of a book, but the ebook was easy to sign up for and read from a computer or a tablet. The book is more than a useful “pocket guide,” but not as comprehensive as a major textbook.
