Description 

This is the third edition of a multi-authored reference on echocardiography by the American Society of Echocardiography. The chapter authors are national and international thought leaders in their respective fields. The second edition was published in 2015. This edition includes access to an eBook version with additional features. 

Purpose 

The purpose is to provide a comprehensive overview of the physics and principles of echocardiography, including cardiac point-of-care ultrasound and focused cardiac ultrasound in emergency clinical settings. Additionally, the book intends to provide up-to-date overviews of interventional echocardiography as well as the use of echocardiography in systemic diseases like sarcoidosis and amyloidosis. 

Audience 

The intended audience includes cardiologists, internists interested in echocardiography, and cardiology fellows in training. 

Features 

The book’s 179 chapters are grouped into 25 sections. Section one focuses on general principles of echocardiography, while sections two to five detail the approach to different types of echocardiography including transthoracic echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, point-of-care, and contrast echocardiography. Sections six through 22 provide comprehensive discussions of the principles of assessing different cardiac chambers and valves using different approaches of echocardiography. Section 23 focuses on echocardiography evaluation of systemic diseases like amyloidosis and sarcoidosis. The final two sections provide clinical insights into interventional echocardiography and echocardiography use in advanced heart failure assisted devices like LVAD, Impella, and ECMO. 

Assessment 

This is an excellent quality book. It is a valuable resource for cardiologists, internists interested in echocardiography, and cardiology fellows in training.
