Description
This atlas is a comprehensive overview of image-guided interventional spine procedures. Each section provides a stepwise approach for the setup, positioning, and optimal performance of these procedures. This edition improves upon the original 2013 book with the addition of overviews of ultrasound-guided procedures as well as improved illustrations and images from cadaver dissections. This edition includes access to a website with an ebook version.
Purpose
This purpose is to explain proper techniques for image-guided procedures. The authors stress the importance of setup and consideration of safety views in the performance of interventional procedures in the preface and throughout the book to ensure proper needle positioning and patient safety. These are essential for those performing interventional spine and musculoskeletal procedures and this book is a must have for both trainees and experienced providers. The online format allows for quick access on electronic devices and the videos supplement the text and illustrations well. This book and website exceed the objectives by comprehensively detailing complicated procedures in a clear, concise fashion.
Audience
The audience includes learners across the spectrum of training. The authors explain complicated procedures in a straightforward manner enabling students and residents to understand. Fellows and more experienced practitioners from a variety of medical specialties, such as physical medicine and rehabilitation and anesthesiology, also can use this atlas as a refresher on less commonly performed procedures and to review essential techniques/basics. As a result, this book more than meets the needs of its intended audience. Dr. Michael B. Furman is a recognized expert and pioneer in the field of image-guided spinal procedures.
Features
The atlas begins with an overview of basic needle techniques, fluoroscopic and ultrasound techniques including setup, patient safety, and radiation safety. These important concepts are referenced in later chapters. The sections start with sacral/coccygeal procedures and then progress cephalad, including lumbar/lumbosacral, thoracolumbar, thoracic, and cervical. Multiple procedures/approaches are outlined in each of these sections, including transforaminal and interlaminar epidural injections as well as medial branch blocks and radiofrequency ablations. The final sections cover common ultrasound guided procedures involving the shoulder and hip as well as bone marrow aspiration procedures. The organization of the sections allows for quick referencing and each section has excellent illustrations outlining important anatomy. The illustrations and other features of the text are available online, with the added benefit of being able to zoom in on images. This text does not outline ultrasound procedures for all joints/tendons, but adequately outlines common procedures for the shoulder and hip.
Assessment
I’ve used the first edition of this atlas countless times to prepare for procedures and I consider it a must have for providers performing image-guided spinal procedures. I routinely advise younger residents to reference this atlas when they start on their sports and spine rotations. This is an exciting update to the field and is justified based on the addition of ultrasound-guided procedures and the new and improved images and illustrations.
