Description
This fifth edition beautifully compiles the breadth of gynecologic surgery in one source. Color illustrations and photographs are abundant, consistent with the authors’ objective of utilizing these modalities to teach surgical procedures. A unique element of this book is the use of computer-generated enhancements to actual photographs. An eBook accompanies the text, which includes a selection of added videos. Chapters have been added and others revised since the prior edition, published in 2015.
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to present surgery via the anatomic dissection, primarily using illustrations and photographs to describe surgical procedures. The objectives are worthwhile and are greatly needed to support gynecologic surgeons. The material in print and on the website is valuable and meets the needs of the audience. The website expands the accessibility of the book as a resource for trainees and practicing surgeons. Both book and website meet the objectives of presenting a broad scope of gynecologic procedures in detail.
Audience
The audience includes a spectrum of residents, fellows, nurses, practitioners, and faculty. The material is targeted to both general gynecologists as well as gynecologic subspecialties and meets their needs well. Both Michael Baggish and Mickey Karram are broadly recognized as leaders in gynecology, with numerous publications and honors in their long and distinguished careers. The authors have invited select individuals to contribute to the work. These individuals, such as Tommaso Falcone, are also outstanding authorities in their respective fields.
Features
The text covers the breadth of gynecology, beginning with fundamental elements of pelvic anatomy and the basics of suturing and knot-tying, to the most complex of procedures, including laparoscopic and robotic assisted laparoscopic procedures. The best aspect of this title is the consistency of the authors’ adherence to presenting surgery as anatomic dissection. The volume and its use of art is exceptional. The only shortcoming to be noted is that often text is detached from the accompanying illustration by several pages.
Assessment
This is an outstanding atlas that well deserves its place in the library of gynecologic surgeons. The objective of this text is not to discuss disease processes in detail, nor to elaborate on the various indications, perioperative considerations, etc. of gynecologic surgery. Thus, the book stands as a worthy companion to others such as Te Linde’s Operative Gynecology, 12th edition, Handa and Van Le (Wolters Kluwer, 2020) and Williams Gynecology, 4th edition, Hoffman et al. (McGraw Hill, 2020). The authors have added significant material and revisions that justify replacing earlier editions.
