Description
This comprehensive book on breast cancer has the unique goal of helping deliver superb multidisciplinary management in a community setting. Purchase of the book allows access to an electronic version which is searchable, can be annotated, and is highly portable.
Purpose
The editors, noting that “most cancer care is delivered in the community setting,” have designed this book as “an ideal resource for practicing medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, and radiation therapists, trainees and practitioners in related fields, and oncology nurses and case managers.” This is a worthy purpose, and the book amply meets these objectives.
Audience
This is a book for anyone involved in the care of patients with breast cancer, including nurse navigators, trainees, surgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, and radiologists. There is a particular focus on how excellent results may be obtained in the community setting – that is, away from major academic or cancer centers. This real-world focus in no way diminishes the high-quality state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care recommended. The editor and authors are all credible authorities.
Features
The first section is, appropriately, devoted to “Breast Cancer Care in the Community.” In this section, a chapter on oncology nurse navigation is particularly welcome. The remainder of the book follows the usual flow from diagnosis through treatment. It includes chapters on outcomes and underserved communities. There is a wealth of detail about pathology, molecular subtypes, and surgical management. The book concludes with chapters on “Coping with the High Cost of Cancer” and “Expectations for the Future.”
Assessment
This is a high-quality reference that addresses real-world breast cancer care. It should be read by anyone in the field, whether they practice in a “community” setting or not.
