Description
The rapidly developing field of immunology is in constant need of updated texts. This textbook, now in its 10th edition, includes figures, review questions, and online material that together provide an excellent, up-to-date source of information on immunology.
Purpose
The book’s purpose is to provide the newest information on advances and immunological clinical applications. These are worthy objectives since up-to-date information in a rapidly evolving field of study is always in demand. Having the material in print and online is simply convenient. The links to articles online are very helpful. As an instructor, having access to figures is very helpful in lecture preparation. The objectives are well met both in print and online.
Audience
This book is for students, residents, and practitioners. The book meets the needs of the intended audience because it is written so that individuals with different backgrounds in immunology can learn from the materials presented in each chapter. The authors are highly credible. Each has been in the immunology field for decades and Dr. Abbas has been an author of this textbook since the first edition.
Features
This is an excellent immunology textbook because it thoroughly dissects the fine developmental process of the immune system. It is well written and this edition’s illustrations are excellent. The book does not have features that are not also available on the website. The only shortcomings are the lack of discussion of the gut microbiome and its impact on immunity and immune system development.
Assessment
This 10th edition is justified as it has updated prior versions. This book is comparable both in text and online to Janeway’s Immunobiology, 9th Edition, Murphy and Weaver (W.W. Norton & Company, 2016). Both this book and Janeway’s are the top immunology texts for teaching and obtaining up-to-date information in the immunology field. The only immunology text that provides more in-depth information (that may not all be required for teaching immunology) are Paul’s Fundamental Immunology, 8th Edition, Flajnik et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2022) texts.
