Description

This is a comprehensive yet concise text for learning human embryology in a case-based fashion. It also serves as a concise review of human development. The digital version is an essential add-on including numerous development videos and a hyperlinked treatment of each chapter in the text. Student learners would likely revert to this version.

Purpose

A clinical case starts each chapter. The embryology of the system concerned is concisely covered and illustrated. Follow-up scenarios are found at the end of the chapter. Newer molecular biology is also covered in each chapter. With the reduction of embryology in most curricula, this text and its digital version form a complete, yet concise, treatment of embryology – from gametogenesis through organ system development at a level consistent with current curricular time and treatment.

Audience

The textbook is aimed at any student group with embryology in the curriculum. This is an aggressive statement given the large variety of levels of embryology in many curricula. However, the way the textbook and digital version are organized/written allows users to easily get to and understand clinical anomalies. The authors are internationally renowned embryologists and this concise textbook is heavily backed in the digital version by the embryological Bible that spawned this more user-friendly edition for today’s learners.

Features

This text utilizes case studies to introduce a concisely written chapter that spans the entire gamut of embryology, from general development of the embryo and fetus through development of the organ systems. The concise nature is facilitated through clear descriptions that deal with important concepts. The digital version’s development videos are crucial to effective understanding of many embryological concepts. Clear, richly colored diagrams add to the textbook’s level-spanning nature of its wide variety of learners. References are plentiful in the digital version.

Assessment

There are numerous embryology textbooks that are much more voluminous. The feature that makes this text unique is the concise treatment that essentially covers the gamut of embryological development and systems. I see this as a potential best seller due to its concise yet clinically related nature that is usable by all students with embryology in their curriculum.
