Description
This annual publication, currently in its 71st year, is a relied-upon, easy-to-use desk reference for clinicians of every discipline.
Purpose
The purpose has been to provide a “practical medical textbook that busy clinicians could use to access medicine’s latest therapeutic advances.” The book continues to do this in the manner and legacy of the original editor, Howard Franklin Conn, MD.
Audience
This is a book for every clinician, as it brings together in one place the most recent and accepted treatments of illness, as Dr Conn envisioned. All of the contributors are well-respected clinicians in their respective fields.
Features
The book is divided into 21 sections representing the traditional organ systems in addition to preventive health, physical and chemical injuries, children’s health, women’s health, pregnancy and antepartum care, men’s health, sexually transmitted diseases, infectious diseases, and an extremely helpful section symptomatic care pending diagnosis. Each chapter begins with a boxed summary that highlights the most pertinent issues of background, what labs to check, and treatment. The boxes are followed by a more in-depth discussions of the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment. There are numerous tables and figures with algorithms and references. The only limitation is that the photographs are black and white, which does not highlight all of the characteristics.
Assessment
This is a tremendously well-organized, concise yet complete book that has extraordinary usefulness as a desk reference for all clinicians, regardless of their specialty.
