Description
This book provides a high-yield overview of intraoperative consultations in pathology. This third edition is an update to the previous version, which was published in 2018.
Purpose
The book aims to serve as a diagnostic resource during intraoperative consultation, detailing the entire process from specimen receipt to result reporting.
Audience
The target audience includes trainees new to intraoperative consultation. The book effectively provides a foundation of knowledge for trainees to build upon with practical experience and aids in formulating differential diagnoses for each tissue type. However, surgical pathologists who deal with frozen sections will also find it useful.
Features
The book begins with a general introduction of the purpose and process, then divides each chapter by organ or tissue type. The bullet-point format describing the highlights of the most common differential diagnosis is effective when referencing this book in the frozen section laboratory. The short chapters with very focused topics make it easy to search for specific information. The writing is extremely clear and easy to read. The book also includes summary tables that can be referenced quickly. Each chapter contains multiple pages of high-quality images that highlight key histological features and enable readers to compare and contrast different entities within the same tissue. New features in this edition include chapters devoted to emerging techniques. The book is well-balanced, ensuring readers are prepared to use current techniques while offering knowledge of future methods.
Assessment
This book effectively serves as a high-yield resource for trainees new to interoperative consultation in pathology. The new chapters on emerging techniques enhance the content, compared to the second edition. The book is extremely useful to have on hand in the frozen section laboratory to learn about techniques and the most common diagnoses that may appear under the microscope. I highly recommend this book.
