Description
This book provides a comprehensive overview of the clinical management of various gynecologic conditions. This tenth edition updates the previous version, which was published in 2018.
Purpose
The book aims to provide a broad introduction to the diagnosis, pathogenesis, and treatment of various gynecologic oncology conditions, sorted by chapter. It includes details about targeted therapy, molecular genetics, genetic counseling, and adjunctive information, such as palliative care and basic principles in gynecologic radiotherapy.
Audience
The book is suitable for a variety of audiences. It provides broad overviews of topics in an easily readable format, appropriate for community practitioners as well as medical students or residents. The book also includes specific details in prose as well as tables of dosing regimens or clinical studies, beneficial for gynecologic oncology fellows and practicing gynecologic oncologists. The book is written by an impressive list of 58 contributors who are leaders in the field and practice at institutions across the U.S.
Features
The chapters cover diagnosis, staging, and management of the various forms of preinvasive and invasive gynecologic conditions. The recent editions have been expanded and updated as new information and novel therapeutics have been developed. The book also contains content related to molecular genetics/hallmarks, genetic counseling, palliative care, basic principles of radiotherapy, and epidemiology. It includes five reference appendices ranging from cancer staging to cancer screening recommendations. The text is written in a conversational manner, so that learners may read a chapter in a single sitting. However, the tone of the writing does not lend itself to a cursory overview. The book contains many well-organized tables, some of which include summaries of various research studies on a topic, as well as many colorful histologic photos, graphs, and even intraoperative photos. One of its few shortcomings is that some of the intraoperative photos are not of the highest resolution and could benefit from an update.
Assessment
This book is the authoritative text in the field of gynecologic oncology and for good reason. The organization, completeness, and respectable list of authors are noteworthy. Any budding gynecologic oncologist will benefit from the material and should make this book a part of their collection.
