Description

This is the sixth edition of a comprehensive survey of pediatric critical care medicine first published in 1992. The previous edition was published in 2017. This edition includes access to an online version.

Purpose

This is a detailed resource with content ranging from basic science related to the pediatric patient to application in critical care practice.

Audience

Given the scope of material the book contains, readers at all levels may benefit, although some of the clinical applications may not be clear to junior readers.

Features

A description of the discipline of pediatric critical care opens the book, followed by tools for outcome prediction, bedside procedures, and imaging with ultrasound. Subsequent sections describe the discipline based on organ system problems associated with the pediatric patient. Initial organ system chapters describe cardiopulmonary critical care followed by neurological issues, pediatric nephrology, endocrine disorders, hematology, nutrition, infectious disease, and environmental problems including trauma and child abuse. Concluding presentations describe the role of the anesthesiologist and anesthesia procedures in the pediatric intensive care unit along with principles of pharmacology and toxicology. Chapters are clearly written and beautifully illustrated. Line drawings, photographs, and multicolor figures reproduce well. The majority of the references for each chapter appear only in the online version, with just the major references in the print book. Recent references date to within two years of publication, though many references are older, representing classic papers. Concluding pages of the book include a detailed subject index. The accompanying online version is a complete reproduction of the print version with comprehensive reference lists, most of which have links to PubMed. Another attractive online feature is a list of board review questions, which are organized by chapter with content designed to parallel chapter topics. Questions sometimes include figures to enhance presentation.

Assessment

This is a superb overview of one of the essential ICU disciplines. The authors have fulfilled their goal of providing both a review of physiology and essential clinical applications. This book may be compared to Rogers’ Textbook of Pediatric Intensive Care, 5th edition, Nichols and Schaffner (Wolters Kluwer, 2016).
