Description

This is the seventh edition of a two-volume comprehensive review of respiratory diseases and their management originally published in 1988. The most recent prior edition was published in 2016.

Purpose

This book provides a detailed review of pulmonary medicine, from anatomy and physiology to an in-depth discussion of a wide range of clinical pulmonary diseases. The online material was not available for this review, but the print book alone readily meets its objective to provide a broad survey of respiratory medicine.

Audience

Learners and teachers of pulmonary medicine and related fields will find this a useful resource. The authors have invited recognized experts in their respective fields from predominantly North America, but representing 18 countries in all, to contribute to this book.

Features

The book is very well organized, into three broad parts. First are scientific principles of respiratory medicine, including chapters on anatomy, physiology, and immunology. The second part addresses diagnosis and evaluation of respiratory diseases, including in-depth chapters on the most common diagnostic testing and procedures. Finally, part three focuses on clinical respiratory medicine, with chapters divided into sections for easy identification. Each chapter ends with a key reading list directing readers to important publications. Multicolor images are of high quality and contribute to readers’s understanding. The appendix provides concise definitions, and the expansive subject index provides citations for figures, tables, and online content.

Assessment

This comprehensive text remains among the essential pulmonary medicine resources. The seventh edition has been updated with additional clinical topics and a restructured format for ease of use.
